Hatching Chicks!
Last term was very exciting for all of us, we hatched our own chicks!!!🐣🐥
We put some special eggs into an incubator and talked about what might happen to them. We learned that the incubator is a special machine to keep the eggs warm and cosy like a Mummy hen would do, and that we had to keep the eggs safe inside so that they might hatch! There were lots of suggestions as to what might be inside the eggs! "Ducks, chickens, turtles, dinosaurs, snakes, birds....?!" We had to leave the eggs in the incubator for 21 days, it was a very long time and we couldn't wait to see them hatch! The children were so excited about our special eggs, they would check on them everyday to see if there were any changes and they looked at our number line to see how many days we had left to wait!
Eventually some of the eggs started to crack! They started slowly, just making a tiny crack in the shell and spent all day trying to get out of the eggs! It was so exciting! When we arrived at nursery the next day, we had three chicks in the incubator! They were a bit soggy at first, but after spending some time in the warm incubator, they soon turned fluffy!
When the chicks were big enough, we had a turn at holding them. They were so soft and fluffy and we loved getting a closer look to see how they had changed. By the time they had to leave us and go back to the farm, the chicks had started to grow feathers on the tips of their wings and had got some very long legs! What a fantastic time we had watching them grow! 🐣🐥🐤
