Potions, spells and spiders!
Over the last two weeks we have taken inspiration from Halloween to create lots of new experiences!
The children began the first week by reading stories about witches, skeletons, spiders and magic to introduce the Halloween theme. Some of our favourites were 'Room on the Broom', 'Funnybones', 'Meg and Mog', 'Spells' and 'What's in the witch's kitchen?' We talked about the different characters and looked at the funny spells they were doing. Then we began to explore how to make our own spells!
We transformed the mud kitchen outside into a 'Cauldron Cafe', filling it with pictures of cauldrons, recipes for potions and ideas for making our own magic wands! Together, we stacked some tyres in the middle of the kitchen and put a bowl inside it to make our special cauldron! The children have been filling it with sand, sequins, leaves, sticks, and glitter with a few "spiders, frogs and worms" thrown in too!!!
Inside, our activities have included...
Pumpkin exploration - What's inside? What does it look like? How does it feel? How do we get it out?
Making webs - Using loose parts such as string, pipe cleaners, cotton wool etc to design our own spider webs on black paper.
Sticky, tricky tweezers! - The tough spot turned into a giant web, with bugs and slime stuck inside! We used tweezers and our pinchy fingers to grab the bugs from between the stringy web!
We also had coloured water with glitter, sequins, small bottles, scoops, jugs and spoons for making magic spells. Some children had a go at making witches and wizards hats! Others used the K'nex construction to make magic wands and thought up their own funny rhymes for spells! "Izzy, wizzy, let's get bizzy....turn you into a frog!!!"
What a busy two weeks we have had!!!! 😃🕸🔮🕷🎃
